The Australian skipper has claimed over 300 dismissals in 71 appearances with an stellar bowling average.
The Australian selection chief George Bailey has stated that skipper Cummins will be a central figure in this winter's England-Australia contest.
Rumors had circulated that the veteran bowler might be unavailable due to a ongoing back issue that remained unresolved.
Earlier indications from the squad suggested no final decision had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches kicking off on November 21 in Western Australia.
The selector shared that his recovery is on track and was "optimistic" about the prospects of being involved.
"We're aware that the window is narrowing and multiple considerations around that, not just the physical problem, but further aspects," the selector added.
"It's positive. We firmly believe that he's going to play a significant role. Ideally it's the first Test. If not, then we'll pick it up."
Previous Setbacks
The captain missed the ODI and T20 games against India and New Zealand last month after examinations confirmed a lumbar bone stress.
Previous incidents include of spinal problems, with flare-ups in several earlier campaigns leading to absences from multiple domestic campaigns in a short span.
He emphasized he would be proactive in his approach in his recovery plan to secure his spot for the Ashes.
The selector indicated that it was unclear if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his rehabilitation but conceded it was "getting tight" for him to recover fully for the initial match.
Backup Options
Should Cummins not be fit, ex-skipper Smith will take over the captaincy.
Versatile player Green was recently pulled out from the national team for their limited-overs matches against the subcontinent side as a safety move because of soreness in his side.
He labeled it as a "slight concern and mentioned that Green will play in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "in a good place to be ready to bowl."
"Extensive planning has gone into building out the plan for him to participate for the opening match as an all-rounder," he elaborated.
"His involvement was limited to the initial matches anyway. His aggressive style the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, should it hinder progress for 24 more hours, we just made the decision to approach this more conservatively."
