Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for an extended period when dozens of them entered the country's airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations impacting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the airport's airspace.
As many as 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend floated over the Vilnius area, which is home to Lithuania's main urban center and near the border with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
At least 11 balloons transporting numerous containers of illegal tobacco products have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to border security officials.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Although causing problems, representatives clarified that "Balloons with contraband - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in the Baltic region and Poland."
To date in the current year, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Cross-Border Effects
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has documented over 100 cases in which illegal goods were transported from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Illegal Transport Methods
Regarding inquiries concerning why smugglers utilize a method that is especially affected by weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to confiscate the maximum possible quantities of contraband and to apprehend coordinators and involved individuals so that these practices become economically unsustainable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.
Similar occurrences in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about improving airspace protection throughout European airspace.
