European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States

The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States against five Europeans working on combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted individuals that were central to efforts to enact laws governing American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and disinformation.

This disagreement threatens to become part of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and European institutions.
