Minister Says MoD Examining Security Risk from Vehicles from China, as Personnel Advised to Refrain from Confidential Discussions in Vehicles.

A defense minister has stated that the Ministry of Defence is actively investigating the potential security risks posed by Chinese-made cars, and personnel have been told to refrain from talking about classified matters in any vehicles.

Security Guidance for MoD Personnel

In a recent appearance on LBC, Luke Pollard addressed reports that MoD staff have been told not to talk about secret information while riding in Chinese vehicles.

He stated that the MoD is “looking into” Chinese vehicles within its fleets, but stressed that security is a issue in all modern vehicles.

Our department has a fleet of tens of thousands of vehicles in the Ministry of Defence and those vehicles represent a very small number.
However regardless of if you’re driving a Chinese car or a non-Chinese car, what we’ve asked our people is not to plug MoD technology into their car, not to have discussions at a classified level in any vehicle, because of the increasing risks of surveillance that are present in all automobile, to only have those confidential conversations in protected areas. This is a prudent and sensible thing for anyone worried about security.

After it was suggested that it would be prudent for the MoD to cease using every Chinese vehicles, Pollard replied: That is exactly what we’re investigating at the moment.”

Wider Defence Background

The revelation comes as reports from Scandinavian countries have warned the United Kingdom to the presence of multi-purpose kill switches in Chinese electric buses, which could allow the Chinese government to disable buses and bring chaos to transport systems.

Additionally, a Russian spy ship has been directing laser beams at Royal Air Force aircrew, labeled a “highly dangerous” act by government representatives.

The broader security environment underscores the importance of strong protocols and caution in all areas of official activities, including transport use to communication habits.
